“Why do Filipinos really like to eat rice?

There are so many restaurants around the Philippines and interestingly,they have special offers of unlimited rice.

Basically, these restaurants serve a cup of rice per order.

The amount of the rice is almost similar to the amount of what Japanese’s have..

So far, my observation of their meal consumption is that the local people consume a lot of rice regardless of gender.

Because of this, my curiously has been aroused abling me to prompt these questions.

As much as I know, many Filipinos spend time in church for around 1 hour to pray and study the bible.

Of course it is with the excemption of their travel time.

Okay..since its happening right now, this is one of my happiest moment.

T: To spend time with your friends?

G1: Yes, spending time with my friends.

Anyway, its one of the Filipino culture..to be able to spend time with friends an family…

And we haven’t seen each other for a while, so I’m actually pretty happy that I am living the Filipino way.Its our way of catching up.

T:What do you say?

G2: Happiest moment? Maybe the same, when we catch up with family like during birthdays.

And last time we had a mini celebration and we Filipinos really like to videoke, that’s all.

T: ahh..videoke

G2: We drank and sang and say hello to everyone so every time we meet our friends or family.

We are very happy because its like they are recharging new with all the stress, with all the negativities.

So, we can forget our problems and be productive.

G3: My gosh…the same….currently, meeting friends and family will make u like crazy with happiness.

V2 T: Could u tell me about a happy moment that you have experienced recently?

G1: Happy moments sir, is during the conduct of blood donation.

G2: Happy moments for us sir, is when a lot of people participate in our program….

like for example during the conduction of blood donation, we are so much happy if a lot of people come to donate their blood.

G3: so they donate in Red Cross.

T: ahh,okay so…

G3: So we are promoting the voluntary donation.

G1:Today so far is my happiest day coz i woke up with family,sir.

That’s a precious gift everyday that i expect.

V3 T: Could you share a happy experience that you have experienced recently?

B:Actually, you are the first person I’ve encountered to ask me that question.

B: We are always happy. Everyday, we are happy.

As you know, I had already asked people this question before, right?

However, I asked a different set of people the same question again.

Because the people who answered my question seemed as　the typical conservative women.

That’s why, I asked women who are more modernized and let us see if they would have a different viewpoint as to this topic.

Do they just only wait for an invitation from men and let them take the initiative to approach them?

T: How do u attract a man that u like?

I think Filipinas are conservative,right?

What do u do when u like someone?

G: In Filipino culture?

T: …like your strategy?

G1: Well, if someone really likes me and i like them back,

I have this tendency not to make the first move.

Even if i know we both like each other,

I’m still kind of wait for the person to make the move..maybe

because part of me is worried that if i make the move…

its straightforward or too suggestive in my part,

so i just wait…thats it.

But when they make the first move,

i make sure to hold a good conversation

because i think one way to maintain soneone’s intetest in u is through a good conversation.

G2: Well, how do i attract a man i like?

Most of the time…usually,

if i like someone,

I get their attention first.

Once i get their attention, I try to..

i dont know what we call the term “pabebe”.

It’s like u want to..

u dont like to its like ur teasing them.

In addition, u wait for the first move and all.

Usually, I do that.

But if u really like that person,

u have to get him..I get him, right?

So u take a risk I take a risk.

I don’t know..

Its kind of literal or liberal….

it depends on the situation though….

and the husband test.

G3: Actually for me,

I’ve never made the first move to anyone..or any guy.

I don’t know..

I think it’s just a convenient culture that a guy should do the first move.

It takes back to colonial history like the Spaniards taught us

how to be like “Maria Clara” image.

That females should be conservative,

they should　be good mannered

and then they should wait forR the guy to pursue them.

Thats why it became part of our custom from generations to generations.

T: What kind of impression do you have of Japan?

G1: According to the article I have read, during childhood they train their child to grow up clean..they focus on traits.

G2: They teach good traits to their children.

G1: That’s what i’ve read in social media.

G2: And they have a good technology.

T: The what?

G2: Technology

T: For example,what?

G2: Your robots

T: Robots

G2: Yeah

T: What kind of robots?

G1: What she meant is..big machines, the ideas are used in expanding, its quite useful and it was entertaining.

G2: Very useful.

T: Do you know some Japanese culture?

What is popular for some Filipinos?

G2: Not so famous.

( laughters on the background)

T:What kind of impression do you have about Japan?

M:Japan has many beautiful places and there are alot of good people, as far as I know.

T:How about culture? Do you know some Japanese culture?

M:…No, I only watch Anime.

T:That is one of the culture.

T:What kind of animation do you like?

M:Most of Japanese anime…

T:For example?

M:Naruto, One piece, Bleech…well…Nijiiro, Tokyo Gulls, Nanatsuno Taizai…A lot of anime, also Dragon Ball.

T: What kind of impression do you have of Japan?

G1: Well, the first one that you see when you say Japan iS that “anime”.

Its one culture of Jap that really penetrated the Filipino culture.

A lot of people that i know actually accepted the culture, we appreciate how they tell stories, even in the way they dress, like what we see in the internet, stuff like that.

T: So what kind of animation do you like?

G1: Well, the most popular, Naruto.

T: ahh, Naruto, very popular.How about you?

G2: I think of “Charlotte”.

I mean I’m not even fond of anime like her.

But I’ve heard of them because its part of Japanese culture.

T: How about you?

G3: Mine is same to their answers.

I like the way Japanese make movies like ” Spirited Away” .

It really captured the heart of everyone even those who were not Filipinos.

Every viewers like its cultural effect.

In my perspective, I think that basically Filipino women have conservative traits except those who are involved in ” monkey business” at night.

Of course, its a special case similarly to that ofJapanese women having the same work.

T: How do u approach a man that u like?

G1: Its not good to look at if we are the first one..

G2: …to approach a man. We don’t like to show them..

G3: For Filipinos, men usually approach the women first.

G1: The principle of Filipinas, they don’t do the first move.

T: Do what?

G3: Do the first move.

T: How can they notice that a woman likes them?

G1: Gut feelings.

G3: For me, we really don’t show it but if we like a man, we check his characteristics, if u happen to discover it..then maybe your too good.

T: Usually, only men approach the women in the Philippines?

G1: Not all, but its common here.

G2: Women are shy to show their feelings to a man coz if they do that, they would think we are desperate to find a man so we are kind of shy.

Why..do u have a different culture in Japan?

T: In Japan, females can approach a man,sometimes my female friend invites me to her house for lunch,dinner or a drink.

G3: Does that mean your female friend likes u or its just a friendly approach?

T: First time is friend of course.

G2: That’s why we cant generalize that all women are shy, others do it too.

This time, the Theme is “What do you want to be in the future?”

In Japan, government office workers and IT engineering are famous jobs for male high school students while being a nursery teacher.

And nursing occupation are famous among female high school students.

How about with Filipinos?

What do they want to be and why?

T:So, what do you want to do in the future?

My future? To be a flight attendant.

T: Why do you want to be that?

I want to see other places like Taiwan, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

T: I see.What about you?

To be a doctor.

T: Doctor? For doing treatment ,right?

Yes, very smart..

T: I see.

T: Are you a student?

G1: Hmmn..fresh graduate.I’m currently reviewing for the incoming board exam for educators.

T: So, what do you want to be in the future?

G1:I want to be a teacher..a math teacher for junior high school students.

T: Why do you want to be a teacher?

G1:Because for the Filipinos, we believe in the motto that education is the best way to get rid of poverty and only through educating the children that we can make it happen.

T: Thank you…How about you?

G2:I’m still studying.

T: Still studying…and what do you want to be in the future?

G2:It’s either to be a chef or a make _up artist.

T: Why do you want to be a chef or a make up artist?

G2:Because sometimes if im bored, I practice doing those.

T: Ok, that’s why. Thank you.

T: Are you students?

G1&G2: yes..

T: So, my question is, what do you want to be in the future?

G1: I want to be a successful engineer in the future.

T: Why do you want to be..

G1: Engineer? Because my family wanted me to take the course.

T: That’s your family’s decision?

G1: Yes..and i wanted it too.

T: Aha.you also wanted it. How about you?

G2: I’m still confused.

T: You are still confused.

G2: I have a lot of choices in life so i havent chosen what will be my course or future job.

T: What is your major?

G2: We are incoming university students.I’m taking IT.

T: That means you also want to be an engineer in the future?..No?

G2: No…computer.

T: ahh.computer. What kind of job do you want to have in the future?

G2: I think I want to work in offices.

T: office is an office worker?Like what?

G2: Anything.

T: ahh, in the office?

G2: I just work….in the office

“Why do the Filipino children send their salary
to their parents in the Philippines?”

I am not sure whether Japanese know it or not,many filipino people send part of their salary to their parents.

As you know, Japanese people are opposite to the Filipino people, right?
In contrast to our culture, our parents give us money when we get married, during pregnancy,giving birth or in building a house,etc.

T: Why do Filipino children send their salary to their parents?

G: I I want to help my parents because they helped me when I was a child.I want to take care care of them when they are old.

T: ahh.

B: The reason why I’m sending money, I want to help…at that point when they are getting older, i want to take care of them,for that i can repay their sacrifices and sufferings for me when i was a child.

T: How many percent are you going to pay to your parents?

B: How many percent…

T: 10%…20%..like that.

B: For me as a working student, if i can give them, ill give 100%.

T: …..really? Thank you. How about you? Everything?

G: 100% because they give me 100% love when i was a child.

T: But ..if u pay everything…you cannot buy anything.

G: For me?

T: Yes.

G: Yeah, maybe but it’s worth it. I can see my parents not working hard anymore..they are living a life…
